Göteborgs domkyrka

Kyrkogatan 28, Göteborg

The Gothenburg Cathedral – formally known as Gustavi Domkyrka in Swedish – is named after the city’s founder, King Gustav II Adolf. Designed in the Neoclassical style by architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg, the cathedral was inaugurated in 1815, although construction was not fully completed until 1827. The building has undergone several renovations over the years, most recently in the mid-2010s. During that restoration, the Neoclassical style was enhanced with a colour scheme of white, grey and gold. In the area? Step inside and take a moment to admire the cathedral’s beautiful details – from the chancel, where wooden columns have been marbled to resemble stone, to the altarpiece in gold. Don’t miss the angels on either side of the cross, sculpted by court artist Jacques Adrien Masreliez. There’s always something happening in the cathedral. Daily services are held, and concerts takes place every week. If you want to experience something truly magical, the Lucia celebration and Christmas concerts are something quite special – attracting both locals and visitors every year.
