Göteborgs Remfabrik

Åvägen 15, Göteborg

At Åvägen 15 in the Gårda neighbourhood, there is a factory where nearly nothing has changed since the turn of the century. The building still looks just like any other factory from the early 1900s and is likely one of the most well-preserved work environments in Scandinavia from this period. Production in the factory ceased in November 1977. The staff simply switched off the machines, went home, and left everything as it was. The factory looks exactly the same today as it did then. The City of Göteborg Council preserved the buildings after closure, and today Göteborgs Remfabrik is a museum run by an association of volunteers. The association’s members work to preserve the knowledge of how the machines are operated, producing ribbons, and lace that are sold in the museum shop.
